In a rural area of Clatsop County, a tragedy unfolded that cut short the life of a dedicated public servant. Sergeant James Shepherd, a 23-year veteran of the Oregon State Police and commander of the Astoria Patrol Office, was enjoying a moment of quiet, chopping wood with a fellow off-duty officer. It was near Highway 30 at approximately 7:00 p.m. when the peace was shattered by a lone assailant. The attacker, who had recently been released from prison, fatally shot Sergeant Shepherd.
