Troy Wicker, a 35-year-old man from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, was found dead on February 1, 1982, in what initially appeared to be a senseless and random act of violence. Wicker's body was discovered in his home with a gunshot wound to the head. Early evidence indicated that he had been killed by someone he knew, as there were no signs of forced entry or struggle. The lack of clear evidence led investigators to consider multiple theories, including robbery, personal disputes, or an inside job.
