On October 1, 2021, the life of 58-year-old William Mealback Jr. came to a violent end in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The events of that day would not only claim his life but also that of a police officer, leaving a community in shock. Mealback and Brian Lansing Martin, a man who reportedly had a close, father-son-like relationship with him, were inside Mealback's truck on Avalon Avenue when the situation turned deadly.
It is alleged that Martin shot Mealback in the head before pushing his body out of the vehicle and into the street. In recorded jail calls with Mealback's widow, Martin later claimed that Mealback had reached for a gun inside the truck.
Following the shooting of Mealback, Martin fled in the victim's vehicle, leading to a police chase. The pursuit ended in a shootout behind the Southgate Mall in Muscle Shoals. During the exchange of gunfire, Martin shot two Sheffield Police officers, Sergeant Nick Risner and Lieutenant Max Dotson. Sgt. Risner was critically wounded and succumbed to his injuries the following day. Lt. Dotson was struck as well, but his ballistic vest saved him from serious injury. Martin was also wounded during the shootout and was subsequently taken into custody.
The alleged perpetrator, Brian Lansing Martin, has a prior criminal history, having been convicted of manslaughter in the 2011 death of his own father. He was sentenced to ten years in prison but was released in 2016 after serving just over three years, a point of contention and public outcry following the deaths of Mealback and Sgt. Risner. For the events of October 1, 2021, Martin is facing a litany of charges, including three counts of capital murder, three counts of attempted murder, and abuse of a corpse. After undergoing multiple evaluations, he has been deemed competent to stand trial. The court has separated the cases, with one focusing on the capital murder of Sergeant Nick Risner and the other on the death of William Mealback Jr.
