On October 1, 2021, in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, 58-year-old William Clare Mealback Jr. was fatally shot. Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Mealback had been residing in Cypress Inn, Tennessee.

Authorities reported that Mealback and his close friend, 41-year-old Brian Lansing Martin of Sheffield, Alabama, were traveling together in Mealback's truck.
