Perry was discovered on the steps leading to his apartment building located at 8009 1st Avenue South, having been fatally shot. The incident marked another grim statistic in a year that saw a total of 94 homicides in the city.

Following the investigation, Cortney Chancellor was arrested and charged with the murder of William DeAngelo Perry. The case proceeded through the legal system, and Chancellor was ultimately convicted for his role in Perry's death. As a result of the conviction, Cortney Chancellor was sentenced to serve life in prison for the murder.
