On the evening of October 26, 2008, a sense of celebration turned to tragedy in Birmingham, Alabama. While many were occupied with the festivities surrounding the annual Magic City Classic football game, 21-year-old Kenneth Wayne Holmes Jr. was fatally shot as he drove his car. The young man, known to his loved ones as 'Kenny Wayne,' was a father to a one-year-old daughter. The abrupt and violent end to his life sent ripples of grief through his family and community.
