In the fall of 2008, a 24-year-old Black man named Christian Callins was fatally shot in Birmingham, Alabama, during what authorities described as a robbery attempt. His death on November 23, 2008, was part of a larger, violent crime spree that gripped the city between 2008 and 2009. The investigation into Callins's murder would eventually unravel a complex web of criminal activity orchestrated by a local gang.
The case took a significant turn when investigators linked Callins's death to
Martez Seay, the leader of the gang. Further investigation revealed that one of Callins's own accomplices, 27-year-old Gregory Shelton Jr., was killed the day after Callins's murder. Authorities believe Shelton was killed because he failed to get rid of a cell phone connected to the Callins case.
The unraveling of the gang's activities eventually led to the arrest of Martez Seay. In 2011, Seay pleaded guilty to capital murder, taking responsibility for the deaths of Christian Callins, Gregory Shelton Jr., and others. His plea agreement resulted in a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. The violent chapter came to a final close with Seay's death in prison in August 2023.
