On a cold February afternoon in 2009, the life of 34-year-old Demarshell Nicol Taper, a female resident of Birmingham, Alabama, was tragically cut short. Originally from Mississippi, she had made Birmingham her home for about two years before her untimely death. On February 13th, her body was discovered in Arthur Shores Park, located in the city's Druid Hills neighborhood.
She had been shot in the head, and witnesses reported hearing as many as four gunshots in the area.
The investigation into her death quickly led to a person of interest. Authorities identified 25-year-old Carey Lamar Lee as a suspect and arrested him at his Birmingham home the day after the discovery of Taper's body. It was revealed that Taper and Lee were socially acquainted, with some reports indicating they were involved in an affair.
In November of the same year, Carey Lamar Lee pleaded guilty to felony murder in connection with Demarshell Taper's death. As a result of his plea, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The case garnered wider attention after being featured on the television series 'The First 48,' which documented the initial stages of the homicide investigation.
