In the small town of Samson, Alabama, a tragic and unforeseen act of violence unfolded on March 10, 2009, forever altering the community. Among the victims of this devastating event was James Irvin Starling, a 24-year-old man. The perpetrator of this horrific act was Michael McLendon, a 28-year-old man who, for reasons that would later surface, embarked on a killing spree across two counties.
The day of terror began when McLendon set his mother's house ablaze in Kinston. From there, he drove to Samson, where his violent path crossed with that of several unsuspecting residents, including his own relatives. On a quiet afternoon, McLendon opened fire on a porch where members of his family were gathered, killing his uncle, two cousins, and a neighbor with her infant daughter. He then continued his rampage, shooting his grandmother in her nearby home.
As McLendon drove through Samson, he fired indiscriminately at strangers.
It was during this chaotic period that James Irvin Starling was fatally shot in the back as he tried to flee the unfolding horror. Others were also killed at a local gas station and on the highway as McLendon continued his spree.
The chase and the violence finally came to an end at a metal plant in Geneva, where McLendon had previously been employed. After a standoff and an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement, Michael McLendon took his own life. In the aftermath, investigators discovered a letter in which McLendon expressed his motives, citing ongoing disputes with his mother's family and his own personal struggles. His actions left a scar on the small Alabama community, and for the family and friends of James Irvin Starling and the other victims, it marked a day of unimaginable loss.
