In the summer of 2014, the life of 19-year-old Dave Lavon Martez Populus was tragically cut short in Mobile, Alabama. On the evening of June 20th, Populus was shot and killed. The incident that led to his death was reportedly connected to a house party that had taken a violent turn.
Following an investigation by the Mobile Police Department, a suspect was identified and taken into custody.
Eighteen-year-old Darrius Chestnut was arrested and subsequently charged with the murder of Dave Populus.
The legal proceedings against Chestnut moved through the court system, culminating in a conviction. Unsatisfied with the outcome, Darrius Chestnut pursued appeals to overturn the decision. His legal battle continued for several years, eventually reaching the highest court in the state. In April of 2025, the Alabama Supreme Court denied his petition, effectively upholding the conviction and bringing a final resolution to the case.
