On the morning of Thursday, January 7, 2016, a sense of unease settled over the 1200 block of Duval Street in Mobile, Alabama. At approximately 7:45 a.m., the sharp report of a gunshot shattered the morning calm, prompting residents to alert the authorities. When officers from the Mobile Police Department arrived at the scene, they discovered a grim tableau. Inside a residence, they found 29-year-old Latreash Leggett suffering from what appeared to be a fatal gunshot wound.
Despite the swift response of Mobile Fire-Rescue, her life could not be saved, and she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The initial stages of the investigation quickly pointed to a domestic altercation. Detectives began to piece together the events that led to the tragic shooting, and their focus soon narrowed to one individual: Latreash's boyfriend, 38-year-old Anthony Wilson. It is alleged that Wilson shot Leggett and then fled the scene, sparking an immediate search by law enforcement. A 'Be On The Look Out' bulletin was issued for Wilson, and the search for him intensified. It did not take long for the law to close in on the suspect. Members of the city's Special Weapons and Tactics Team, or SWAT, located and apprehended Wilson on Interstate 65.
Following his capture, Anthony Wilson was taken into custody and interviewed by homicide detectives who were diligently working to understand the motive behind the deadly shooting. After the interview, Wilson was formally arrested and charged with the murder of Latreash Leggett. The investigation into the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting was ongoing as authorities sought to provide answers and bring a measure of closure to a community shaken by the violent loss of one of its own.
