On August 17, 2016, 58-year-old James William Griffin, affectionately known as "Street James," was found deceased from a gunshot wound near a mattress under the Elton B. Stephens Expressway in Birmingham, Alabama. Griffin, a familiar figure in the downtown area, was known for washing cars and riding his bicycle, particularly around the Loft District.
