Joseph Adam Turner, a 26-year-old male, tragically lost his life on Saturday, August 20, 2016, in a horrific mass murder that claimed the lives of five people in Citronelle, Alabama. The brutal attack took place in the early morning hours at Turner's residence, where he lived with his wife, Shannon Melissa Randall. The violence that unfolded that day stemmed from a domestic dispute involving Turner's sister, Laneta Lester, who had sought refuge in his home to escape her abusive ex-boyfriend,
Derrick Dearman.
In the days leading up to the murders, Lester had fled to her brother's home for safety. Dearman, a resident of Leakesville, Mississippi, discovered her whereabouts and, on the night of August 19th, made multiple attempts to contact her at the Citronelle house. His escalating aggression culminated in a violent rampage in the early hours of the following morning. Armed with an axe and a handgun, Dearman broke into the home and attacked the occupants as they slept. The scene discovered by authorities was described as horrific, with an immense amount of violence inflicted upon the victims.
The victims of the massacre were Joseph Adam Turner; his wife, Shannon Melissa Randall, 35; Robert Lee Brown, 26; Justin Kaleb Reed, 23; and his wife, Chelsea Marie Reed, 22, who was five months pregnant. Following the murders, Dearman abducted Laneta Lester and her infant child, taking them to Mississippi. Lester was later found alive but had been badly beaten. She was able to alert the authorities to the slayings at her brother's home.
Derrick Dearman was swiftly identified as the suspect and turned himself in to the police in Greene County, Mississippi. He was extradited to Alabama and charged with six counts of capital murder, which included the death of the unborn child, and two counts of abduction. In September 2018, Dearman pleaded guilty to the capital murder charges. Despite his plea, a jury trial was still held, which resulted in his conviction for the murders, kidnappings, and beatings. He was subsequently sentenced to death for his crimes. The Alabama Supreme Court upheld his sentence. On October 17, 2024, Derrick Dearman was executed for the murders.
