On November 10, 2016, 44-year-old Joe Nathan Thomas Jr. was fatally shot on Interstate 65 near Creola, Alabama. Authorities responded to the scene around 2 a.m. and discovered Thomas with a gunshot wound to the back of his head. A female witness, who had been in the vehicle with Thomas and the suspect, Joseph Ryan Carter, earlier that evening, reported that after the two men exited the car, she heard a gunshot and saw Thomas collapse. She then fled into nearby woods and contacted authorities.
