On March 15, 2015, in Cottonwood, Alabama, 33-year-old Jeffrie Brett Swisher was fatally shot in an incident that also claimed the lives of 43-year-old Mary Alice Joyner and the perpetrator, Christopher Joyner. The event was classified as a murder-suicide. Prior to the shooting, Christopher Joyner had been actively sought by authorities for violating a protection order and making threats against one of the eventual victims.
