On a Monday evening in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 31-year-old Andre Lawrence was cut short by gunfire. The male victim was shot and killed on April 12, 2021, at an apartment complex in the eastern part of the city, near Huffman High School.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office was alerted to the shooting, and deputies arrived at the Springville Landing Apartments on Springville Road to find Lawrence suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite the efforts of medical first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation that followed pointed to a dispute between Lawrence and another individual.
Within a day of the fatal shooting, authorities had a suspect in custody. Carlos Chaleo Heard, 31 years old at the time, was arrested and subsequently charged in connection with Andre Lawrence's death. Investigators determined that an argument between Heard and Lawrence escalated, leading to the deadly shooting.
Heard was taken into custody and booked into the Jefferson County Jail. He faced a murder charge for his alleged role in the death of Andre Lawrence. His bond was set at $150,000. The case was then set to proceed through the criminal justice system.
