On January 1, 2022, a fatal shooting occurred at a convenience store located at 540 Main Street in Shorter, Alabama. The victim, 28-year-old Xavier Smith Jr., a resident of Shorter, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Shorter Police Department promptly initiated an investigation into the incident and sought assistance from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).
