In the quiet community of Tallassee, Alabama, the life of 26-year-old Stephvon Adams was tragically cut short on the night of December 17, 2016. A Black male, Adams was found with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso in a residential area, leaving a community in shock and mourning. The initial discovery of his body in the road near the intersection of New Quarters and Taylor Roads painted a grim picture of the violence that had unfolded.
The investigation into the death of Stephvon
Adams quickly gained momentum as law enforcement officials pieced together the events of that fateful night. It was determined that Adams had been the victim of a robbery that escalated into a fatal shooting. The callous nature of the crime sent ripples of fear and anger through the local community, as friends and family remembered Adams as a loving father and a cherished friend. The senselessness of his death left many grappling with the sudden loss of a young life.
Within days of the discovery of Adams' body, the Tallassee Police Department, in conjunction with the Elmore County Sheriff's Office, made their first arrest. Malik Johnson, an 18-year-old from Tallassee, was taken into custody and charged with capital murder. As the investigation continued, two other suspects were identified and apprehended. Marquel Collins, then 19, and Jacory Taylor, then 20, both from Montgomery, were also charged in connection with the murder. A fourth individual, Demetrius Thomas, was later arrested and charged with robbery.

In a plea agreement, Marquel Collins pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of felony murder and received a 25-year prison sentence. Jacory Taylor and Demetrius Thomas both pleaded guilty to robbery. Taylor was sentenced to 15 years in prison, which was suspended for five years of supervised probation. Thomas also received a 15-year suspended sentence and was ordered to complete five years of probation. The resolution of the case, while not erasing the pain of their loss, provided a sense of justice for the loved ones of Stephvon Adams.
