In the early morning hours of Friday, October 31, 2025, the life of 29-year-old Kenneth Lamar Spencer, a Black man from Tallassee, Alabama, was tragically cut short. Gunfire erupted in the 300 block of Second Avenue, and when Tallassee police officers responded to a 911 call, they found Spencer suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Tallassee Community Hospital by a private vehicle but was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.

described as chaotic, with tensions running high as first responders attempted to render aid to Spencer. In the immediate aftermath of the incident, law enforcement officials began their investigation into the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting. This led to the swift arrest of a suspect in connection with Spencer's death.
Tallassee police took 39-year-old Robert Andrew Smith, also a resident of Tallassee, into custody at the scene. Smith was subsequently charged with murder and transported to the Elmore County Detention Facility. He is being held under Alabama's Aniah's Law, which allows judges to deny bail for individuals accused of violent crimes. While an arrest has been made, authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive for the shooting. Investigators have appealed to the public for any additional information that could shed light on the events leading to the confrontation that ended Spencer's life. Funeral services for Kenneth Lamar Spencer Jr. were held on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at the First Assembly of God in Tallassee, with interment following at Rose Hill Cemetery.
