The night of May 1, 2017, ended in sirens and flashing blue lights in Birmingham’s Norwood neighborhood, where gunfire shattered what had been a gathering inside a house on 15th Court North. Joseph Smith, a 34-year-old African American man, was found outside the home with multiple gunshot wounds after a fight broke out during a night of gambling and drinking, according to police accounts reported at the time.
