On the night of July 6, 2017, 39-year-old Obie Hillery was fatally shot in Prichard, Alabama. According to his sister, Erica Coleman, Hillery was visiting a friend when he was attacked around 11:30 PM. He sustained eight gunshot wounds and managed to inform police that multiple individuals attempted to rob him, though he did not recognize them.
