Jaivontavious Sellers, a Black 18-year-old man, left Union Springs and ended up in downtown Tuskegee in the early hours of July 8, 2017, when the night broke open with gunfire. Police said he was shot around 2:20 a.m. along the 200 block of East Martin Luther King Highway, a stretch that sits close to the heart of the city; by morning, the scene had become a homicide investigation, with investigators trying to untangle who had been there, who had fired, and why it happened in that moment.
