On January 6, 2018, 60-year-old Willie Shanks was fatally shot in Hayneville, Alabama. The incident also resulted in another individual being injured. The community mourned the loss of Shanks, who was remembered for his positive personality and contributions as a community entrepreneur. He was affectionately known by the nickname "Shank" and had attended Central High School in Hayneville.
