On November 23, 2019, Lowndes County Sheriff John “Big John” Williams, aged 62, was fatally shot at a gas station in downtown Hayneville, Alabama. The incident occurred when Sheriff Williams, who was not in uniform, went to the gas station to disperse a crowd. William Chase Johnson, who was 18 years old at the time, is accused of shooting the sheriff.
