In the quiet town of Pinson, Alabama, the life of 25-year-old Carlos Tyrell Gray, a male who had once reached the heights of professional football as a player for the Green Bay Packers, came to a violent and tragic end. On the night of April 30, 2018, Gray was found shot to death in his home, a discovery made by his girlfriend who returned to a grim scene.
Upon their arrival at the Balboa Terrace residence, Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies were met with evidence suggesting a life
lived with a certain level of risk. Inside the home, they found marijuana, digital scales, and a significant amount of firepower, including a Glock handgun with an extended magazine and an AK-47 rifle. This led investigators to believe that the homicide could be drug-related.
The investigation into Gray's death took a dramatic turn the very next day with a violent act of retribution. A man named Darryl Thomas was kidnapped and subsequently found murdered, his body discovered on a dirt road near Lipscomb. Investigators quickly linked this new homicide back to the death of Carlos Gray, believing it to be an act of retaliation. It was their assessment that the perpetrators of Thomas's murder held him responsible for Gray's death.
This led to the arrest of four individuals: Cortez Clark-Johnson, Myzel Contest Arbuckle, Aeriol Lasean Barbee, and Jalen McIntyre. One of the suspects was described as a close friend of Carlos Gray. These four men were subsequently charged with capital murder and kidnapping in the death of Darryl Thomas. While the motive for this second murder was clearly stated as retaliation for Gray's killing, and despite early speculation by authorities that Thomas was a suspect in Gray's death, no information has been publicly released confirming that Thomas or any other individual has been officially charged with the murder of Carlos Tyrell Gray.
