On a Tuesday afternoon, May 16, 2023, what began as a road rage incident on Narrows Road in Pinson, Alabama, tragically escalated, leading to the death of 54-year-old Joseph Keith Alexander of Gardendale. Alexander, a male, was driving with a passenger when he noticed another vehicle following closely behind them. Both drivers pulled over, and Alexander exited his vehicle to confront the other driver. The verbal altercation that ensued quickly turned violent when Alexander was shot.
First responders transported him to UAB Hospital for medical treatment.
For nearly a month, Alexander fought for his life, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries on June 12, 2023. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into the shooting, identifying 26-year-old Javier Brykese Burney of Pleasant Grove as the suspect. The investigation culminated in Burney's apprehension by the U.S. Marshals Service on August 4, 2023, in the 300 block of Morgan Road near Bessemer.
Following his arrest, Javier Brykese Burney was booked into the Jefferson County Jail. He faces a charge of capital murder in connection with the drive-by shooting. Additionally, he was charged with four counts of failing to appear in court. Burney was held without bond. Joseph Keith Alexander was remembered as a loving son, brother, and father who worked for Ingle Demolition and Salvage, Inc. His hobbies included tinkering with cars, building model cars, playing pool, and spending time on the lake with friends.
