On August 3, 2018, 20-year-old Lawrence McDaniel was discovered with a gunshot wound to the head near County Road 3812 in Arley, Alabama. Arley Police Chief Jerry Cummings, the first responder, found McDaniel lying unconscious but breathing. He was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for treatment.
