In the fall of 2018, a playful and joyful two-year-old boy named Ke’Anthony Jelks Jr. tragically lost his life in his family's home in Birmingham, Alabama. Described by his great-grandmother as having the spirit of 'an old man in a baby's body,' Ke'Anthony's vibrant presence was extinguished on the morning of November 14th. The young male was with his parents at their apartment when the incident occurred.
According to family members, Ke'Anthony's father had recently returned home from
work. He legally carried a firearm for personal protection due to his work hours and is believed to have set the gun down upon his return. It is thought that the curious toddler, described as being a child who liked to explore and play with things, discovered the weapon and, in a moment of innocent curiosity, the gun discharged, inflicting a fatal wound to his face.
In the immediate aftermath, homicide detectives and forensic experts arrived at the scene to begin their investigation into the heartbreaking event. While the family recounted the devastating series of events as a terrible accident, law enforcement officials initially remained cautious, stating that they were still working to determine the precise details of what had transpired. At the time of the initial reports, the death was unclassified, and no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting.
