On a tragic afternoon in Birmingham, Alabama, a vibrant young life was cut short when 5-year-old TaNarius Moore, known affectionately as 'TJ,' was fatally wounded. The incident occurred in December 2019, when the young boy was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of a violent dispute. At the time, he was sitting in a vehicle when two women, who were related, reportedly began shooting at each other.
A stray bullet struck the child, and he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The senseless act of violence led to the arrest of Rickkia Allen, who was subsequently charged with capital murder in connection with the shooting. Following her arrest, the case proceeded through the legal system, and in October 2020, a grand jury indicted Allen on the capital murder charge. Prosecutors announced their intention to seek the death penalty for her alleged role in the young boy's death. According to some reports, Allen later agreed to a plea deal that resulted in a 21-year prison sentence. His grandmother expressed her grief and her desire for justice, stating that she wanted the person responsible to spend the rest of their life in prison. The tragic loss was compounded by the fact that TJ's father had also been a victim of gun violence two years prior.
In a separate and unrelated case in May 2017, another Birmingham male, 25-year-old Ta'Narius Moore, also lost his life to gun violence. This daytime shooting was the result of what police described as a long-standing feud between Moore and another individual. According to law enforcement, the two men encountered each other, and after an exchange of words, one of them produced a firearm and shot Moore multiple times.
At the time of the incident, investigators believed they knew the identity of the shooter, but a lack of cooperation from witnesses at the chaotic scene hindered their ability to make an immediate arrest. Moore's mother spoke out about her pain and her desire for justice, revealing that the same individual suspected in her son's death had allegedly fired shots into her mother's home months earlier without any resulting action. Some subsequent reports have suggested that the death of the 25-year-old was later deemed a justifiable homicide, alleging that Moore had fired his weapon first during the altercation, which would explain the absence of a criminal prosecution in the case.
