On a cold January evening in 2020, the life of 32-year-old Darryl Eugene 'DJ' Paige, a Black male, was tragically cut short in his hometown of Greensboro, Alabama. The fatal incident unfolded on Saturday, January 11, around 11 p.m. on Ward Street, where Paige was visiting with friends at a mobile home.
The evening took a devastating turn when Paige received a phone call and stepped outside. He was then mercilessly shot multiple times. Investigators at the scene recovered a total of 25 shell casings, which suggested that firearms of two different calibers had been discharged, indicating the possible involvement of more than one assailant. Eyewitnesses later reported seeing two individuals fleeing the area in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.
In the wake of the violence, the State Bureau of Investigation was called in to lead the inquiry into Paige's death. The investigation soon pointed toward a suspect, and within days, an arrest was made. Eddie Gray, a 29-year-old man, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with the murder of Darryl Paige. While an arrest has been made, law enforcement officials have remained tight-lipped about a potential motive for the deadly shooting.

The Hale County Coroner, Howard Paige, who is also a cousin to the victim, was one of the officials at the scene, adding a layer of personal tragedy to the official proceedings. The family laid Darryl Paige to rest the following Saturday at Greenleaf Baptist Church in Greensboro.
