In a tragic turn of events on February 16, 2020, Andrew Colvard-Moneymaker, a 27-year-old White male from near Lexington, Georgia, died in a manner that also claimed the life of his father. Andrew had been grappling with mental health challenges.
The fatal incident unfolded as Andrew was attempting to harm himself with a firearm. His 51-year-old father, Jason Colvard, intervened in an attempt to prevent the suicide.
In the struggle, Andrew discharged a single round, which struck him in the head. The bullet then exited and tragically struck his father as well. Both men succumbed to their injuries at their home on Wesley Chapel Road.
Authorities were alerted to the situation after relatives, concerned about not hearing from either man for ten days, requested a welfare check. Upon discovering the bodies, an investigation was launched. Based on forensic evidence and the circumstances at the scene, the Oglethorpe County Sheriff's Office concluded that Andrew Colvard-Moneymaker's death was a suicide and his father's death was a tragic accident. Investigators found no evidence to suggest that Andrew had any intention of harming his father. Consequently, the case was closed without any arrests or suspects being named, as the event was not deemed a homicide.
