Geoffrey Rowry, a 30-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on November 4, 2021, in Bloomington, Illinois. Known affectionately as "Bubba," Geoffrey was a talented rapper with a deep love for music. He was found with a gunshot wound in the courtyard of an apartment complex on East Washington Street. Despite the efforts of first responders and being transported to Carle BroMenn Medical Center, Geoffrey was pronounced dead at 10:15 p.m. that evening.
The Bloomington Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation. Initially, there were no arrests or identified suspects, and the community was urged to provide any information that could assist in solving the case. In June 2023, a significant breakthrough occurred when Bloomington Police arrested Osman “Gudda” McLaurin, a 26-year-old male, in connection with Geoffrey Rowry's murder. McLaurin, who was already serving time in the Illinois Department of Corrections for an unrelated weapons conviction, faced multiple charges, including two counts of murder with intent to kill or injure, one count of murder with a strong probability to kill, and two counts of being a felon in possession of a weapon. The arrest was a result of relentless investigative efforts by the Bloomington Police Department, highlighting their commitment to solving the case and providing closure to Geoffrey's loved ones.
Geoffrey's death marked the seventh homicide in Bloomington-Normal in 2021, underscoring the ongoing challenges of gun violence in the community. His passing left a void in the lives of his family, friends, and the local music scene. The legal proceedings against Osman McLaurin are expected to continue, as the community watches closely, hoping for justice to be served.
