In the fading daylight of a Thursday afternoon in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 33-year-old Kahlia Duquan Sturdivant, a Black male, was brought to an abrupt and violent end. On March 26, 2020, Sturdivant was found suffering from a gunshot wound inside a vehicle in the Ensley neighborhood. The grim discovery was made by Birmingham's West Precinct officers who were dispatched to the 1300 block of Ensley Avenue following reports of a person shot.
Upon their arrival at the scene, officers
found Sturdivant unresponsive inside a silver Chevrolet Impala. He had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel were also present and transported him to UAB Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Sturdivant was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
Initial investigations by the Birmingham Police Department suggested that the shooting may have stemmed from a domestic dispute.
