In the small town of Union Springs, Alabama, a young man's life was tragically cut short in what police have described as a senseless act of violence. Johnarian Travez Allen, a 29-year-old male, was shot and killed on the evening of Thursday, August 27, 2020. The incident occurred as Allen was simply crossing the street, reportedly on his way to a store to get some food.
His journey was violently interrupted, leaving a community in shock and a family to grieve an inexplicable loss.
The circumstances leading to Allen's death were as mundane as they were tragic. According to law enforcement, 22-year-old Jeremiah Wesley Penn became enraged because he felt Allen was not crossing the street fast enough. This impatience allegedly escalated into a fatal confrontation. Penn is said to have exited his vehicle, and after a verbal exchange, he fired multiple shots at Allen. The young man was struck eight times and was pronounced dead at the scene, his life taken over a matter of moments of perceived delay.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Penn fled the area. However, his time on the run was brief. He later made the decision to turn himself in to a sheriff's deputy with whom he was acquainted. Following his surrender, Jeremiah Wesley Penn was arrested and faced the grave charge of capital murder for his alleged role in the death of Johnarian Allen. He was subsequently booked into the Bullock County jail to await legal proceedings for the shooting that stemmed from a fleeting moment of anger.
