In the early morning hours of September 27, 2020, a shooting occurred in the 3400 block of Mobile Highway in Montgomery, Alabama, that would claim the life of 30-year-old Lamar Merritt. A Black male, Merritt was transported to a local hospital after sustaining injuries in the incident, which took place at approximately 3:30 a.m. He later died from his injuries at the hospital.
His death was the 47th homicide in Montgomery that year.
The Montgomery Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation into the shooting. Their efforts led to the arrests of two suspects in early October 2020. On October 7, authorities charged 28-year-old Edriage Vinson Jr. of Luverne with murder. Later the same day, a second suspect, 21-year-old Joedaurius Tolliver, was also arrested and charged with murder in connection with Merritt's death. The specific details and circumstances that led to the shooting were not immediately made public at the time the arrests were announced.
