In the late hours of a September day in Mobile, Alabama, a burst of violence claimed the life of 25-year-old Keontae Deshaun McCants. On September 29, 2020, McCants was shot on Lyric Street in Prichard and later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. His death would set in motion a tragic and swift cycle of retaliation, engulfing another family in loss and grief.
Authorities quickly identified a suspect in McCants' death, charging Sidney Zireef Burke with murder.
The motive for the shooting was not immediately made public, but the consequences of the act would ripple outward with devastating speed. The 'bad blood' between the families, as described by the police chief, escalated dramatically in the hours following McCants' death, leading to what was characterized as an aggressive, family-style revenge situation rather than a dispute between gangs.
The quest for vengeance led to a second horrific crime that same day. Burke's mother, 62-year-old Martha McGinsey, was gunned down in her own home on Roderick Road in Mobile. Investigators believe she was an innocent victim, killed in direct retaliation for her son's alleged actions. Shortly after McGinsey's murder, shots were also fired into the home of Burke's father on Spruce Street, though no one was injured in that incident.
The investigation into Martha McGinsey's murder, aided by home surveillance video, led to the arrests of five men. Four of the suspects, Quinta Martize McCants, Antonio McCants, Laquonte McCants, and Darrin Miller were related to Keontae McCants. The fifth individual arrested was a family friend, Darrion Johnson. These men faced charges of murder and firing into an occupied building. In a later development, Sidney Zireef Burke pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter for his role in the shooting of Keontae McCants. Meanwhile, Quinta Martize McCants, one of the men accused in the retaliatory killing, was found not guilty of murder after a jury deliberated for only ten minutes. The charges against the other defendants in McGinsey's death remain.
