On a December evening in 2020, in the Domaine Mobile Home Community just east of Jasper, Alabama, the life of 36-year-old Jerry Lee James Jr., a White male, was tragically cut short. The incident, which occurred on December 10th, began when James was visiting a woman at her residence. An uninvited man, later identified as Jose Martinez, arrived at the home, leading to a confrontation that would have fatal consequences.
A fight broke out between James and Martinez, escalating with
shocking speed. In the heat of the altercation, Martinez produced a firearm and shot James multiple times. After the shooting, Martinez fled the scene in a vehicle before authorities could arrive. However, his freedom was short-lived, as he was apprehended by law enforcement in Jasper a short time later without incident. Jerry Lee James Jr. was grievously wounded and rushed to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for emergency medical care. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries the following day, on December 11, 2020.
Following the incident, Jose Martinez was taken into custody and booked into the Walker County Jail. Initially, he faced a charge of Attempted Murder. However, with the passing of Jerry James Jr., the charges against Martinez were significantly upgraded by the Walker County District Attorney's Office. The new charges included the grave offenses of Intentional Murder, Robbery in the First Degree, and Domestic Violence in the First Degree, as the woman present during the altercation was also considered a victim of domestic violence. A memorial service to honor the life of Jerry Lee James Jr. was held on Sunday, December 27, 2020, as his family and friends mourned his untimely death.
