On a late summer evening in Stevenson, Alabama, the life of 40-year-old James Jeremy Owens, a Caucasian male, was irrevocably altered. On August 7, 2021, Owens was found with at least one gunshot wound on County Road 287. Despite his critical injuries, he was able to provide a description of his assailant to the authorities who responded to the scene at approximately 10:30 p.m.
Emergency services airlifted Owens to a hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee, for urgent medical care.
For a few days, he clung to life, his condition listed as critical but stable. However, on August 12, 2021, at around 1:22 p.m., James Jeremy Owens succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
Two days after the shooting, on August 9, 2021, a 32-year-old man from Pisgah, Alabama, named Billy Dwight Carter, turned himself in to the Jackson County Jail. Initially, Carter was charged with attempted murder. Following Owens's death, however, the charges against him were upgraded to murder. A bond for Carter was subsequently set at $250,000.
