In the early evening of January 9, 2023, the quiet of a rural county road in Stevenson, Alabama, was shattered by a fatal act of violence that claimed the life of 54-year-old Jack 'Bubber' Edward Thompson. Emergency services were dispatched to a residence on County Road 147 at approximately 6:37 PM, responding to a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, along with the Stevenson and Hollywood Police Departments, discovered Thompson on the
front porch of the home, deceased from what was determined to be a gunshot wound. The white male victim was a resident of Stevenson.
The initial investigation swiftly pointed to a suspect close to home: Jack Thompson's own son, 26-year-old Jacob Tyler Thompson. Information developed at the scene indicated that Jacob had shot his father and subsequently fled. A manhunt was immediately launched, with law enforcement agencies in the surrounding areas put on alert. Authorities released a description of Jacob Thompson, describing him as a white male, 6'02' tall, and weighing approximately 140 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. He was believed to be armed and dangerous, with connections to Stevenson and Bridgeport, Alabama, as well as Jasper, Tennessee.
The search for Jacob Thompson concluded with his arrest. In a turn of events, court records show that Jacob Thompson, who had initially entered a plea of not guilty due to mental disease or defect, later changed his plea to guilty in the murder of his father. Following his guilty plea, Jacob Thompson was sentenced to serve 35 years in the custody of the Alabama Department of Corrections for the murder of his father, Jack Edward Thompson.
