The event that cut his life short unfolded at the intersection of Jacobs and Park Street, sending ripples of concern through the quiet community. Coosa County Sheriff Michael Howell confirmed that his department was investigating the death as a homicide, quickly turning their attention to a person of interest.
Law enforcement's
investigation swiftly led them to a suspect. Jumarkis Cook, a 26-year-old man from the Talladega area, was taken into custody. According to Sheriff Howell, there had been a previous altercation between Cook and Robinson a couple of months prior to the fatal shooting. While Cook admitted to the shooting, he provided a different reason for his actions to the authorities. Witnesses at the scene and Cook's own admission confirmed that both men had been shooting at each other.
Following his arrest, Jumarkis Cook faced multiple charges, including murder for the death of Desmond Jamal Robinson. He was also charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle, as shots were reportedly fired at another individual in a vehicle during the incident. Additionally, Cook faced charges of carrying a concealed weapon without a permit and reckless endangerment. In September 2021, it was announced that the murder charge against Cook would be presented to a Coosa County grand jury for their consideration.
Desmond Jamal Robinson was born on April 28, 1992, in Alexander City, Alabama. He was a father to ten children. His funeral services were held at New Covenant Restoration Assembly, where he had been a member from a young age, playing the drums and keyboard. He was laid to rest at Goodwater Cemetery. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young man whose life was abruptly ended by gun violence.
