In the late summer of 2021, a gathering of family and friends in Anniston, Alabama, turned into a scene of violence that claimed the life of Maurice M. McCauley. On the evening of August 18, the 33-year-old man was enjoying the company of his loved ones when gunfire erupted, fatally wounding him and injuring two others. The sudden outburst of violence left a community in shock and a family grappling with a devastating loss.
McCauley, a resident of Anniston, was pronounced dead at the scene, his life cut short in a senseless act.
For nearly two years, the investigation into Maurice McCauley's death continued, spearheaded by the Anniston Police Department and the Calhoun County Major Crimes Unit. In April 2023, authorities announced the arrests of two suspects in connection with the 2021 homicide. Angelo Terry Smith, 26, and Cederick Lamon Woolverton, 21, both from Anniston, were taken into custody and charged with murder. At the time of his arrest for the murder, Smith was already being held in the Calhoun County Jail on unrelated charges. Woolverton was apprehended and transported to the same facility. The arrests brought a measure of relief to a community that had long awaited answers, as investigators continued to review the possibility of additional charges related to the injuries sustained by the other two individuals at the scene of the shooting.
