On a Saturday night in September 2021, LaCraig Brown, a 25-year-old male from Atmore, Alabama, traveled to Prichard with the intention of selling high-end shoes. He made a stop at Fry Daddy's, a local restaurant, a common practice for him when he was in the Mobile County area. In the parking lot of the establishment on September 11th, Brown was shot in what his family believes was a senseless robbery attempt. He later succumbed to his injuries.
His family expressed that he would have willingly given up the shoes or any of his possessions. Brown is survived by four children and a fiancée.
The investigation into Brown's death continued for months, causing his family significant distress. A breakthrough in the case came when Prichard police issued a murder warrant for a 16-year-old suspect. However, due to a recently enacted state law designed to protect the privacy of juvenile suspects, authorities were barred from publicly releasing the teenager's name. This legal obstacle frustrated Brown's family, who felt the suspect's actions were adult in nature and that his identity should be known to the public. They worried that without public knowledge of the suspect's name, it would be difficult to know if he was still in the area.
In January 2022, four months after the fatal shooting, an arrest was made. The family received a text message from a Prichard police detective informing them that the teenage suspect was in custody. While the arrest could not bring their loved one back, it provided them with a sense of relief and a step towards justice. Family members had actively used social media to spread the word about the person police were looking for, which they believe contributed to the eventual arrest. Following this development, they continued to keep LaCraig Brown's memory alive, holding events to celebrate his life on what would have been his 27th birthday.
