In the early morning hours of July 4, 2022, a dispute in the 500 block of West Main Street in Prichard, Alabama, turned deadly, claiming the life of 38-year-old Cleavland L. Goodwin. An African American male, Goodwin was found deceased at the scene by Prichard Police officers who responded to the incident between 3:30 and 4:00 a.m. He had been fatally shot.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that the incident originated from an altercation between Goodwin and a woman.
During this dispute, a third individual, Michael Edwards, intervened. While the specific motive for the shooting was not made clear by authorities, the altercation escalated to the point of gunfire.
Following the incident, Michael Edwards was arrested and charged with the murder of Cleavland Goodwin. He was taken into custody and booked into Metro Jail on the same day as the shooting. A bond hearing was held on July 6, 2022, where his bond was set at $375,000.
