In the early hours of an autumn Sunday in 2021, the life of Joe Johnson, a 24-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short in Mobile County, Alabama. His body was discovered in a vacant lot on South Wilson Avenue in Prichard on October 10th, bearing the harsh evidence of multiple gunshot wounds. Known affectionately as 'Lil Joe,' he was a devoted father to four children, a cherished son and brother, and a friend to many.
A 2017 graduate of Vigor High School, he was remembered for his volunteer work and his kind spirit.
The investigation into his death suggested that the night began at the Stadium Bar in Mobile, where Johnson was reportedly in the same vicinity as a man who would later be accused of his murder. Later that evening, Johnson went to a club in Prichard. It was there that the violence erupted. He was allegedly shot by 18-year-old Anthony McCall in what investigators believe may have been a robbery attempt. Wounded, Johnson tried to flee, only to face more gunfire from another individual and was subsequently run over by a car. Surveillance footage reportedly captured McCall firing the initial shots.
In the months that followed, the wheels of justice began to turn. Prichard police arrested McCall in December 2021, charging him in connection with Johnson's murder. His case was later bound over to a grand jury, and he is currently awaiting trial. More than a year and a half after the fatal shooting, a second arrest was made. In May 2023, the Mobile County District Attorney's Task Force apprehended 22-year-old Cabriael Washington on a secret indictment for his alleged involvement in the killing. The arrests brought a renewed sense of hope for Johnson's family, who continue to seek justice for his untimely death.
