On December 6, 2021, at approximately 5:00 p.m., Birmingham police responded to a ShotSpotter alert indicating a single gunshot fired at 860 44th Street North. Upon arrival, officers discovered 31-year-old Jona Renee McKenzie lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound. She was transported to UAB Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
