In the quiet community of Salem, Alabama, the life of 57-year-old Carl Anthony Bryant, a male resident, came to a tragic and violent end. On the afternoon of March 5, 2022, a 911 call led Lee County Sheriff's deputies to a grim discovery in a wooded area off Lee Road 140. There, approximately 60 yards behind a residence in the 1600 block, lay the body of Bryant.
The county coroner pronounced him dead at the scene, the cause later determined to be a gunshot wound to his upper body.
The initial investigation into Bryant's death quickly identified persons of interest. For four months, detectives with the Lee County Sheriff's Office worked the case, following leads and gathering evidence. Their efforts culminated on July 5, 2022, with an arrest that brought a sense of resolution to a community shaken by the killing.
Investigators took 20-year-old Ulysses Antonio Pickard Jr., also of Salem, into custody at his residence. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Carl Anthony Bryant. Following his arrest, Pickard was held without bond at the Lee County Detention Center. While the arrest marked a significant development, authorities indicated that the case remained under investigation and encouraged anyone with additional information to come forward.
