In the spring of 2022, the life of 36 year old Demarius Tremaine Fergerson, a male resident of Tuskegee, Alabama, was tragically cut short. On April 25, 2022, Mr. Fergerson was killed in what would become a complex homicide investigation. The initial scene of his death was one of confusion and misdirection, as his girlfriend, Ora L. Stakely, initially claimed that two intruders had broken into her home and shot him.
As investigators delved deeper into the case, the evidence began to tell
a different story. Forensic and crime scene evidence contradicted Stakely's account of a home invasion. The focus of the investigation soon shifted to Stakely herself as the primary suspect in her boyfriend's death. This shift culminated in her arrest and subsequent trial for the murder of Demarius Fergerson.
During the trial in the Macon County Circuit Court, the prosecution laid out a case that dismantled Stakely’s initial claims. Faced with the mounting evidence against her, Stakely took the stand and her narrative changed dramatically. She admitted to shooting Mr. Fergerson but asserted that she had acted in self-defense. However, the jury was not swayed by her new testimony. They found her guilty of murder.
Following her conviction on April 24, 2024, Ora L. Stakely was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Demarius Fergerson. In an attempt to overturn the verdict, Stakely appealed her conviction. The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals reviewed the case, and on August 15, 2025, they affirmed the original conviction, ensuring that Stakely would continue to serve her life sentence.
