Reginald Neal, a 32-year-old Black man known to some as "Money Mon," was remembered by those who knew him as goofy, funny, outgoing, and adventurous. His life was cut short late on a Monday night in his hometown of Montgomery, Alabama.
Just before midnight on March 6, 2023, police and fire medics were called to the 1100 block of Ann Street, in an area between a Walmart and Interstate 85. There, they found Reginald Neal suffering from what was described as a fatal gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. An arrest affidavit would later state that Neal had been intentionally shot multiple times with a .223 caliber AR-style pistol or short rifle.
The Montgomery Police Department launched a homicide investigation that led to an arrest within 24 hours. On Tuesday, March 7, police held a press conference to announce that they had taken a suspect into custody. They identified the man as 26-year-old De’Narreo Harris of Montgomery. In a public display known as a "perp walk," Harris was escorted by officers in view of the media.
Harris was formally charged with murder and transported to the Montgomery County Jail, where he was held without bond. During his escort, some people who knew Harris shouted from across the street that he had acted in self-defense.
As of March 2023, police stated that while an arrest had been made, their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting was ongoing.
