In the quiet, early morning hours of November 4, 2023, the life of 40-year-old Dustin Riley 'Dusty' Grimes was tragically cut short in his Moulton, Alabama, home. A male and a female intruder broke into the residence on County Road 245 with the intent to commit a robbery. In a selfless act of protection, Grimes was fatally shot in his bedroom while defending his wife, Karen.
Following the shooting, the assailants continued their crime, stealing items from the home before abducting Mrs. Grimes. They forced her into a vehicle and drove to an ATM in the East Lawrence area, attempting to coerce her into withdrawing money. In a remarkable display of courage and quick thinking, Karen Grimes managed to escape her captors and fled to a nearby convenience store, where she immediately contacted law enforcement.
The subsequent investigation, a collaborative effort between the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office, Moulton Police Department, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, quickly identified two primary suspects: Jordan Cesar Hernandez, 36, of Decatur, and Auburn Renee Moore, 28, of New Hope. Moore was apprehended later that same day in Decatur. Hernandez was captured the following day after an extensive manhunt that ended in a vehicle pursuit. During the chase, Hernandez reportedly fired at officers before being taken into custody. Both were charged with murder, robbery, and kidnapping. Investigators later revealed a connection between one of the suspects and the victims, stating that Moore had previously worked for the Grimes family.
Months later, in June 2024, a third suspect was implicated in the crime. A grand jury indictment led to the arrest of 25-year-old Asia Hubbard, who was subsequently charged with murder, burglary, kidnapping, and theft of property in connection with the case.
