On November 20, 2023, Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded to a house fire in the 4300 block of Willard Avenue SW. Upon extinguishing the blaze, firefighters discovered the body of 45-year-old Deshawn Kahill Murphy inside the residence. Murphy had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. A dog, also found inside the home, had been shot and killed.
