In the quiet town of Eufaula, Alabama, the life of 15-year-old Zyaire Kayon Hill, a Black male student at Eufaula High School, was tragically cut short on the afternoon of January 7, 2024. He was a passenger in a vehicle traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 431 when a bullet pierced the car through the back driver's side, striking him in the head. Despite being rushed to Medical Center Barbour, he was pronounced dead at 3:52 p.m.
The hours that followed Zyaire's death were marked by a
series of related shootings that shook the community. That evening, shots were fired into two separate residences, though thankfully no one was injured. Later that night, an officer-involved shooting occurred near the intersection of Barbour Avenue and Eufaula Avenue. A 49-year-old man, Patrick Brooks, was arrested and charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle and attempted murder in connection with this later incident.
In the wake of the violence, Eufaula City Schools took the precautionary measure of closing for two days to ensure the safety of students and staff, also making counseling services available to those impacted by the tragic events. The investigation into Zyaire's murder progressed quickly, and on January 10, Eufaula Police arrested two 18-year-olds, Gavin Lebron Martin and Jamichael Trevon Leonard. Both were charged with capital murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and were subsequently held in the Barbour County Jail as the investigation continued.
